The Story of the WI

The Women's Institute in Britain started in 1915. During the First World War it was formed to encourage countrywomen to get involved in growing and preserving food to help to increase the supply of food to the war-torn nation.

The WI has a long history of campaigning on a wide range of issues.  WI campaigns are about changing things for the better and tackling the issues that matter to members.

Members play a central role in bringing issues onto the WI's national agenda through our public affairs and campaigning  - campaigns such as equal pay and climate change, gaps in the midwifery workforce to the plight of the honey bee, WI members embrace challenges and over the years have built a reputation of being  a practical and ambitious organisation
